Why Organic?

It's not just a fad. Buying organic produce not only benefits our body by reducing chemical exposure, but also supports healthy working conditions for farmers, our future, and the earth alone.

There was one photo I came across a few years back that really stuck with me. It displayed farmers in gas masks and suits spraying their crop with pesticides; and I thought "why is this okay for me to put into my body?" Its not! And with my boyfriends support, that is why I made a life changing decision: to only buy organic, local, and non-gmo produce.

With no synthetic chemicals, food grown naturally in nutrient rich soil are not depleted of their nutritional value.

For our farmers, the short term issues that they face when having to spray these synthetic chemicals and pesticides include but are not limited to: abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, headaches, and skin and eye problems. Some of the severe long term problems lead to depression, respiratory issues, birth defects, and even cancer. And even though we ourselves are not coming into direct contact with these chemicals, the amount in our food over time commonly build up to these problems.

If these chemicals make such a negative impact on our body, imagine what it is doing to our planet. So join me in this lifestyle change and feel the complete benifits of what the earth has truely giving us.

meet kale, your new 'friend with benefits'

Kale is one of the most nutrient rich, healthy vegetable out there. It offers us more iron than beef, more calcium than milk, and 10x more vitamin C than spinach.

But it doesnt stop there! I also includes vitamins A & K, antioxidants, low cards and caleries, and potassium.

Why include this is your diet? It encourages healthy eyes, skin, weight loss, low cholesterol, and stronge bones, not to mention it also reduces the risk of heart desease and cancer.

Simular to swiss chard, kale does have a bitter taste. I recommend if you are trying kale for the first time to check out the Creamy Kale recipe, featured on the home page.

keep calm and go coconuts!

Cold pressed virgin coconut oil; I think the question we need to ask is what can't it do for us?!

Coconut oil is so benefical not only to our health but can be used in replacement of most toiletries and cosmetics.

In the health aspect, coconut oil can be used to:

relieve dandruff, heal acne and cold sores, boost metabolism, enrich a mother's milk for her infant, aid weight loss, soothe burns cuts rashes and bug bites. As well as eczema. Since I was an infant I have been fighting with eczema, a horrible non-contagious rash that commonly appears on my skin in the cold winter climates. But since I've started using coconut oil I have been able to tame those horrible rashes! By adding just enough to my skin before and after my showers I have noticed a significant change in how my body has adapted to fight it.

It doesnt just stop there. For beauty, coconut is used as:

a conditioning hair mask, anti-wrinkle eye cream, lip balm, toothpaste, sunscreen, natural deodorant, skin moisturizer, bug repellant. And the list goes on!

Coconut oil can also be used in replacement to cooking oil. You will find in many of my recipes I mention using coconut oil as my cooking base, reason being it that coconut oil can withstand high temperatures without losing its healthy properties. Try also adding a tablespoon to your morning smoothie to help kickstart your metabolism!

food for your gut: Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a pigment found in plants, including most of our green fruits and vegetables. It is a rich source of nutrients & antioxidents, it also aids in enhancing absorption of vitamins and minerals in our body.

But it doesn't just stop there. Here is a list of other benifits when including chlorophyll in our daily diet:

- aids in digestion

- detoxifies the liver, blood, and colon

- treats bad breath and body odor

- helps protect your body from viruses, such as cold and flu

- aids in destroying Pothogenic Bacteria, Fungus, Cancer cells, and more!

nature's herbal healer

Since an infant, I have suffered from eczema; an ichy, irritating, non-contagious rash that forms in patches on thin sensitive areas of my skin. Such as my inner arms, back of my hands, and even the scalp. With applying coconut oil, I was able to soothe the dry, ichy spots, and in the long run I've definately seen a dramatic improvement in the condition of my skin. Although with this cold Canadian winter of 2015, I had to find something a little stronger to help cope with the irritation.

Trying to avoid resulting to harmful chemical treatments, I went to one of our health care specialists at Goodness Me! and she recommended Clef des Champs organic herbal salve. And I got to say, kudos Nadia! With this herbal salve I am able to keep these rashes under control! I love this stuff! It is like natures herbal polysporin.

Whenever I had any sign of irritation on my skin I would apply a thin layer to the area to stop it from spreading and it worked! The ichy feeling was gone in a matter of minates, leaving my skin soft and invulnerable.

But it doesn't just stop there! I also use it for chapped lips, sores, lesions, wounds, and cuts. They also have other salve products; one in particular that I will be keeping in mind is their BioBaby salve, which is gentle enough to soothe a baby's diaper rash.

This is definately one of my favourite Canadian local companies. Check out their wide selection of herbal teas, spices, and skin care products!
